The Rwanda Smart City Edition of ii2030 is set to address some of the critical challenges Rwandan cities are facing in the context of climate change, digital transformation, resource scarcity, rising social inequalities and urbanization. Over the past few years, Rwanda has made strides in the smart city agenda, emerging as a regional leader. Endeva’s ii2030 process intends to catalyze the use of technology for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. To this effect this ii2030 edition has three tracks.
In 2020, Endeva facilitated a fully virtual edition of ii2030 as part of the #Africa4Future Initiative. In this edition, we explored how aerospace technologies like remote sensing and drones can shape Africa’s future and contribute to the SDGs. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Endeva re-designed its proven ii2030 methodology to facilitate a fully virtual consultation and co-creation phase. With Zoom for video conferencing and Miro as a virtual whiteboard we successfully engaged a diverse group of actors from 26 countries, with 65% from the African continent. Miro allowed the interactive participation of all actors in the solution design through the use of virtual post-its, icons, creative drawings, and analytical rankings.
In 2019, Endeva launched the second edition of ii2030. In three tracks participants explored opportunities of remote sensing for food security of smallholders, the power of grid integration to reduce electricity costs and increase grid stability and how to unlock the full potential of 3D printing. The solutions that were co-created during the initiative were piloted in India, Bangladesh and Thailand.
In 2017, Endeva launched ii2030 for the first time. Five tracks focused on technology innovation in diverse sectors such as healthcare, energy, agriculture, finance and mobility. At the center of the initiative was a co-creation workshop in Berlin, where tracks developed prototype solutions that were piloted afterwards. One result of the 2017 initiative was the creation of the Drone Doing Good Alliance - a network of partners that explores how drone technology can accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.
